    Technically there is no "4x4" system. There is 4x4 part time and there is 4x4 full time also known as AWD. The difference is Part time can only be used part time while full time.. well full time.. The reason for those is part time locks the front and rear tires at the transfer case. Both differentials spin at the same speed. If you have different size tires and wrong gears. The tcase can get damaged. Full time on the other hand allows the front and rear to spin at different rates.
