You may have a point there. After all, the only version God approved was in the original languages right? No translation will be perfect - including yours.

That's fine. I didn't mean to open a can of worms. What version you use is your business.

But, I take a quote from the ESV about salvation; Ephesians 2:8, 9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

Salvation comes from faith (in the Lord Jesus), not from any works (including baptism) we can do.

  • chessprowler, what ...

chessprowler, what does it matter what version I use? But since you asked, I used a Protestant version called "English Standard Version" or ESV. I usally don't use a Catholic version because then you might say, "Oh but that's a Catholic version of the bible so I won't even look at it." Or something to that effect. So that is why I used the ESV bible. I will not use the KJV. It was found to be full of mistakes. The ESV bible is a good version if I am going to use a Protestant version.

  • Notice in verse 34 ...

Notice in verse 34 (Acts 16) it says that they all rejoiced that HE believed in God. It doesn't say that they ALL believed in God. But the faith of the head of the household was enough to get the whole household baptized. In verse 33 he AND his family were baptized. They were all there listening to the teachings of the Word of the Lord but it doesn't say that they all understood or believed. But the belief of ONE in the household was enough for ALL of them to get baptized.

  • Acts 16:30-34 Then ...

    Acts 16:30-34
Then he brought them out & said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" & they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, & you will be saved, you & your household." & they spoke the word of the Lord to him & to all who were in his house & he took them the same hour of the night & washed their wounds; & he was baptized at once, he & all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them & he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.

To chessprowler, "She is not to be worshipped, prayed to, asked to pray for someone, etc"

We do NOT worship Mary or any of the Saints. And of course we can ask her to pray for us!!
If I ask you to pray for me will you be selfish and NOT pray for me? I don't worship you and yet I can still ask you to pray for me.

  • To chessprowler; " ...

To chessprowler; "Back to the baptism topic."

Read previous reply PLUS read also in Acts 16:31. You will notice that if one gets "saved" everyone in that household also gets saved. The whole HOUSEHOLD got baptized because of the faith of the head of the household.

In the Catholic Church the parent stands in for the faith of the child or infant. And so that child also gets "saved" or "born again" because of the faith of the parents.
    For context read Acts 16:25-34.

To chessprowler, "Back to the baptism topic. Check Acts 8:36-39. The Ethiopian eunuch asked Phillip what hindered him from being baptized. Phillip said if you "believe" you may. The belief came first then the baptism"

At that time when adults were baptized they had to learn the faith first. But after that everyone in the household was being baptized, including infants & children. Acts 16:15. The parents can stand up for the infant just as the Centurion did for his servant; Mt 8:8.

To chessprowler, "The Catholic Church calls that a "baptism of desire?" Is that biblical? Just because the Catholic Church teaches a certain doctrine doesn't make it so"

    The Word of God is not limited to words in a book. The Word of God was revealed to us in a Trinitarian way;
    1. Sacred Scripture
    2. Sacred Tradition
    3. Sacred Teaching from the Magisterium of the Catholic Church

    Verses that refute Sola Scriptura;
    John 21:25
    Acts 8:30-31
    2 Thes 2:15
    2 Pt 1:20
    Heb 5:11-14

  • Jesus said when you ...

Jesus said when you pray that you are supposed to pray to the Father!! Luke 11:2.

Also, when Jesus said "behold thy mother" He was talking to the disciple John because he wanted John to take care of Mary after He died (Jn 19:27). And John did so.

btw - I don't know why you think that I am ashamed of Mary just because I don't set her on a pedestal and worship her. She is not to be worshipped, prayed to, asked to pray for someone, etc.

The Catholic Church calls that a "baptism of desire?" Is that biblical? Just because the Catholic Church teaches a certain doctrine doesn't make it so.

Back to the baptism topic. Check Acts 8:36-39. The Ethiopian eunuch asked Phillip what hindered him from being baptized. Phillip said if you "believe" you may. The belief came first then the baptism.

  • The thief had a " ...

The thief had a "baptism of desire" because he wanted so bad to be with Jesus.
The Catholic Church calls that "baptism of desire" when someone wants to be water baptized to be with Jesus but they cannot be baptized for some reason (eg. a disagreeing parent...)
Jesus tells us how we are to be born again & that is by being "water baptized." There is no other way around it unless it is "baptism of desire" or "baptism by blood" which is martyrdom.
