Was the state of Pakistan not created to be an Islamic Republic? Apparantly the constitution which brought Pakistan into being in 1947 under Quaid e azam, states that the country will be governed by the commandments contained in the Quran and Ahadith. The Taliban movement in Pakistan (made up of Pakistani religious scholars and followers of Islam, who are very different from the Afghan Talibans seeking refuge in Pakistan) want to see a change in how Pakistan is governed. i.e. not a democratic state but rather one headed by religious figureheads, much like Iran. It is for this reason that this religious movement has much support within the Pakistan army and even some political party heads who lead faith based parties in Pakistan.
The extremism of Islamic teachings eg cutting off hands of thieves, capital punishment for murderers, and whipping of adulterers, does not pose any problem for people with this degree of faith as it is seen as beyond human capabilities of comprehension and best left to God, regardless of logic or proof of the crime. Much is decided on the basis of suspicion alone concerning crime and punishment. And human rights are seen only as flawed thinking.
