  • Great song. ...

Great song. Probably one of the best 100 songs of the 20th century!

Steve's original version is still the very best! A little faster, a livelier beat, and slightly different wording. After Memphis it becomes Good Night America.

    Steve's legacy includes

Good Morning America and Banana Republic.
and both are still in business :)

  • Steve Goodman wrote ...

Steve Goodman wrote this song and sold it to Woody Guthrie (so he said) in a Chicago bar where Steve was performing. You are right Woody Guthrie will always be associated with this song, but give credit to Steve Goodman as the one who wrote it while travelling on the Illinois Central to visit a family member.
