I built the double barrel elm stove to heat treat parts and also imitate the time honored double barrel wood stove. This one is unique in that it has extra firebrick insulation, stainless steel secondary air tubes, and an upper door with a glass viewing window to load and unload cast iron parts for heat treating. A thermometer reads the temp. just above the firebox to indicate whether the 1650 F temp. is reached.

I would take a propane barbecue cylinder, cut one end off and hinge it, line the bottom with firebricks, put a piece of sheet metal around it as a shield, weld a 4" pipe to it for the flue, put a pyroceram viewing window in the door, put a horizontal baffle up near the top, about 2/3 the length of the body (also oriented horizontally) bring in stainless air tubes with 3/16" holes placed under the baffle. raise it up on long legs to make it easy to load, sand blast off the paint.use stove paint.

Thanks. I was just wondering if there is an off-the-shelf stove I could buy here in Ireland. Or perhaps a design for a Small, preferably light stove I could weld up myself. Was wondering about using an old gas bottle for the base; with a glass window so I can see the flames. Regards.

This is more complex than other stoves. it needs to be almost cool to the touch on the outside, small, yet hold reasonable sized pieces, circulate air around the space well. allow you to see the fire. Have minimal clearances to combustible surfaces. insulated on the bottom to keep the fire burning efficiently, and have a firebox baffle for the same reason. a small intake to keep it from overfiring, and small chimney for similar reason. Up on legs to make it easy to load. uses, sauna, boats,

  • after all the ...

after all the thousands of stoves we have built, there is still an unfinished project, making small stoves for situations like yours. Most of our customers like to be able to use large pieces of wood, have the fire last through the long nights, give off massive amounts of heat, burn the wood completely. But you are posing a completely different question. Small pieces of wood, quick heat, probably not giving off lots of heat because you would be close to the stove. I'll have to work on that.

How peculiar. I found this video directly after searching for, and watching, the ska song,Double Barrel.(A memory from my childhood}. Last night I was searching for a small wood-burning stove for a camper van I'm building for myself, here in Galway, Ireland. Any ideas for a SMALL stove for my Angel Wagon?
