di66en6ion, you are spot on. it is not really to do with unlocking talent etc., it is predominantly random and due to chance (most probably) that his brain was organised in the way it was. Synaesthesia is not normal by the normal deifnition (as most people do not have it). Depending on environmental pressures, synaesthesia can be promoted or not. e.g. it may not be prevalent in humans as it may have incurred a selective disadvantage in the past. But in this case, it would be an advantage!

why god? actually i think you should bless the interaction between random genetic and environmental factors which caused the neural connections in his brain to function in the way they do.

These aren't "natural" but his mind is still a human mind, with slight modifications. His brain interacts with itself without any barriers. It's amazing he can live a normal life with such high leveled brain functioning.
