It is a bit but I've never had a problem with it. The iron tip is hot too so soldering isn't without hazards in general.

You can use a dampened sponge (as I said in the video). I just find flicking to be more expeditious, but I like living on the edge... ;-)

This video was very helpful. I am a beginner electrician and am just starting to learn how to solder. I was reading some guides online, but they didnt describe it in a way that a newbie like me would easily understand. But this video does a great job of demonstrating it properly. Thanks.

Touching solder to the iron tip wastes solder on the iron tip that likely won't end up going anywhere. It can also contribute to a "cold solder joint" where the solder doesn't flow over the connection properly because it wasn't heated.

If it was originally soldered you can re-solder it. But metals other than copper and silver are going to be difficult to solder.
