  • Yes. It was during ...

Yes. It was during Spain Prime Minsiter's speach in an international meeting in Chile. Chavez was constantly interrupting Spain Prime Minister Mr. Zapatero, and insulting former Prime Minister Mr. Aznar, in such a way that Mr. Zapatero could not give his speach properly. After several minutes of loud interruptions, Juan Carlos I told Chavez to shut up in order to let Mr. Zapatero to talk

Chavez was not interrupted during his speach. King Juan Carlos asked for the same respect for Mr. Zapatero.

You got a point, dani197el. A Bourbon king recently told Chavez to "shut up". But the movie makes no secret of the brutality.

  • I think Vivaldi ...

I think Vivaldi would be pleased to have his music played on instruments that represent three hundred more years of development.

The "original instruments" movement has contributed much. However, Bach on a modern piano is just as valid as Bach on the harpsichord, and more so if Glenn Gould is performing.

A performance must be as close as possible to the written intent, but not (falsely) closer.

  • "Puissance, plaisir ...

"Puissance, plaisir, lumiere" is totally Foucauldian. Louis XIV was in danger of his life during a noble rebellion, la Fronde, and he had the bright idea to make his court so attractive that the Playuhs of 17th-cent France, the Dukes of Earl so to speak, would abandon their drafty castles and come to the Palace Louvre, and Versailles.

I think (je pense) that "peste de la Florentan, dommage, ptui, pow right in the kisser" means "God hates F*gs ".

Tough guys DO dance, and a gay man saved the President, probably, on September 11.

If you like French films but have trouble with DVDs *sans sous-titres* I recommend Danton, La Nuit de Varennes and La Reine Margot.

  • You don't need ...

You don't need French to enjoy it, the music and dancing carry the film. Knowing some French, I figured out that the director is probably "queering history": Lully spies upon Louie making love to a woman and is distressed: Louie rejects Lully.

When it opened, I realized that I was about to see a cinematic depiction of the legend of Lully's death. It was pretty bloody, and the movie is a flashback on Lully's deathbed.

  • yes, it is a French ...

yes, it is a French movie (5 years old or so), and actually there is no english subtitles in the DVD (nor german, or spanish or so..)
The film talks about the way Louis XIV used "le spectacle royal" as a political weapon to increase his power against aristocraty.

Alevic88,I share your admiration: the soundtrack is brilliand: pure delight of baroque music by Lulli, performed by the renowned Musica Antiqua Koln (they play authentic baroque instruments only)! Fantastic! One of the best soundtracks ever, based entirely on classical music. And the film is excellent. A work of art indeed!
