Gaiting dogs at an AKC conformation German shepherd specialty show in the Puget Sound area, June, 2007. I own the copyright to the film, but not the song. It's "Someday, Somehow" by The Beu Sisters from the soundtrack to Because of Winn-Dixie. Enjoy!

  • You can't get angry...

You can't get angry because of something as absolutely ridiculous as this is. I know your concerns: "running on their hocks" and all that good stuff. But take into consideration the breeders out there who are trying to get rid of that gene. Not all AMbred dogs look like this. Our male is no where NEAR like these dogs. Doesn't run on his hocks. Much straighter in the rear all together.

Don't just judge everyone here by saying, "I can't believe you guys would do this to this beautiful animal!!"

Thses dogs are not just kept to run around a ring, many like i said have many titles to their names and some have working titles, meaning a herding title, which is what they were bred for.

I didn't say just a German shepherd, i said a show GSD, many of these show dogs do have a workng title, one of the top GSD sires of all time has a herding title. so to say they are meant to work, which is true, is to say people do not look at the titles these dogs have and just look at them as a show dog and dimiss them as being able to work because they are show dog.

  • I do live with a ...

I do live with a GSD which is the most amazing dog I have ever owed. But I will say that I greatly disapprove of breeding a GSD purley conformation and showing. They are meant to work and that is what makes them such a beautiful majestic dog - not the length of their coat or their head size. A brilliant GSD breeder once said that to breed a dog for any other purpose then what they were meant to do is to kill the breed. No animal should be bred just for show espesially these dogs

  • I am sorry but do ...

I am sorry but do any of you who have bad comments about these beautiful live with a show dog? i live with two of them and they are as agile and have stamina to boot. as with any dog working or show conditioning is important and you can't tell me or anyone else that a working dog if not conditions could herd all day. i am sorry but until you live with a show GSD don't pass judgement on them or the people who have bred them.

  • Newsflash, this is ...

Newsflash, this is a video hosting site.

Firstly, we have eyes and can see the video the same as you can, and secondly, I've been to GSD Specialty Shows and saw these supposed herding dogs firsthand.
The original GSD did not run on their hocks, look like they're running up hill, or look like Bambi on ice when attempting to walk on smooth surfaces.
The original members of the breed didn't walk like that. Check out the pics. Or doesn't that count because you weren't there to see them in person?

  • How awful. Look at ...

How awful. Look at what people have done to this breed - not to better its health, but to make it look "flashy".
They can't even run correctly. They're running on their hocks for God's sake! They couldn't herd like that for very long because they'd drop from exhaustion.
What are people thinking when they do this to an animal?
In Michigan we have a vet who used to show Shepherds but no longer does so. She said she could no longer breed an animal like that in good conscience.
    Good for her!

  • Well German Bred ...

Well German Bred GSD's are well know for there hip dysplasia. They run like and accordian. Shepherds are a herding breed....not a working breed. If Germans want to classify shepherds as working...then let them. I bought a german import and he had a 7 year health guarentee from a well known breeder...at 2 years old he had severe dysplasia. I then went out a bought a buddy for him....lifetime guarentee on this american bred......lived to be 18 with NO health problems. And both were x-rayed yearly.

I can't believe the way these dogs look ! Almost running on their hocks and the roach back. Sorry, I like the old fashion GSD. Large dogs with straight legs.

  • If you mean ...

If you mean American show shepherds in general I agree. I love German shepherds and when I see modern GSD show dogs compared to Max von Stephanitz's original breeding stock it's heartbreaking. His dogs were perfection in fur. Unfortunately sport breeders have been working ever since to undo that perfection. I will never stop loving the breed, at the same time regretting I could not have known those early dogs, before they fell victim to human "fashion."
