I would not worry about running into another highly skilled fighter wanting to actually fight you on the street in all seriousness its not going to happen. The UFC makes up a very small % of elite athletes. 99.99999% of any real life street altercation will not be with an individual with that skill level in the fighting arts. The UFC arguments hold very little weight when it comes to learning a martial art like Aikido because its strictly for self defense purposes anyways!

people in demos move with the blows to avoid injury and to make the art look more effective....this crap might work on a drunk at the bar...but against any fighter of real skill its bullshit...never saw an aikido guy in ufc back when it started..and now its all crosstrained mma so i guess we will never know..too bad.

I love how these guys just get up and run in a strait line at their opponent's shadow and do kinda a half ass slap attempt in effort to give the other guy their arm. Aikido is the only thing gayer than tea kwan do.

as in any martial art you have to take what is applicable and tune it towards YOUR style the Marine Corps teches some akido moves in with its martial arts program which i have used in Combat in all honesty unless your fighting someone who knows how to grapple REAL fights dont often go to grappling and thats based on expierience

Aikido is not a sport. Its strictly self defense! It has no place in the UFC or any other type of full contact kumite style fighting! BJJ is very effective especially in a one on one senario assuming the practioner is skilled enough to get the attacker on the ground which is not always as easy as the gracies would make it seem.

It wouldnt be effective at all. The most effective martial art tday is Brazilian Jiu jitsu

except for the clothesline, they seem effective somehwat

aikido is dancing. every seen aikido in MMa? no. it's not applicable because the partners seagal is doing is dancing with, would resist a lot more in real life and it would'nt be nearly as pretty.

"Real Life", eh? I didn't see a single actual punch being thrown, only standard Aikido attacks. That's why I stopped practicing Aikido after 2 years. I loved the movements and the spirit behind it, but I didn't want to have to wait 20 years before I could handle myself in a real fight.
