The Book of Mormon, like the Bible, contains a record of God's dealings with a part of the House of Israel. It contains prophecies of Christ and also reveals how Christ, after his resurrection and ascension into heaven, later ministered to those who had waited for him in the New World. The Book of Mormon was anciently abridged by a prophet named Mormon and was engraved on gold plates, to preserve the sacred writing for a future time.

Joseph Smith received the divine commission to translate the gold plates through the power of God. The translation was published in 1830 as a volume of scripture, a sacred record.

We invite all people everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if the book is true. Those who pursue this course and ask in faith will gain a testimony of its truth and divinity by the power of the Holy Ghost.

Those who gain this divine witness from the Holy Spirit will also come to know by the same power that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world, that Joseph Smith is his revelator and prophet in these last days, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's kingdom once again established on the earth, preparatory to the second coming of the Messiah.

"The Book of Mormon is true, just what it purports to be, and for this testimony I expect to give an account in the Day of Judgment." (Encyclopedia, 86-87) - Joseph Smith, Jr.

  • God's hand is in ...

God's hand is in this work. We do not hold to the creeds of men, but the word of God in the Bible, Book of Mormon, and our living prophets.

  • Ex. 20: 3 "Thou ...

Ex. 20: 3 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

Doesn't say there aren't any others, just that none shall be held above our God. Polytheists WORSHIP many gods. We worship the God of all gods as indicated in this next scripture.

Abr. 3: 19 "And the Lord said unto me: These two facts do exist, that there are two spirits, one being more intelligent than the other; there shall be another more intelligent than they; I am the Lord thy God, I am more intelligent than they all."

  • Tavlo, for JS ...

Tavlo, for JS martyrdom to be a "shootout", there would have to be a chance for him to win. I believe the jailer actually gave JS the gun (can't remember where I got that, may not be true). There was a mob of hundreds, unless he had a machine gun, he had no chance. That's not a shootout. That's desperation. As for pictures of JS translating, yes, he occasionally used a hat to block out the light, but that wasn't the only way he translated. Either depiction is correct.

  • Benishe: just ...

Benishe: just believing that there is more than one god makes you a polytheist. People make up gods, but none of them are alive or real.

    There is only one God.

And to answer the second part of that comment shakaka:

I have read a lot of the BoM, I'm in process of reading it. Most of it is copied from the bible anyway. I'm also reading the other books, because most of the doctrine of the LDS church is not found in the BoM.

I was planning on going to an LDS church if omiolo promises to go to a Christian church. I've challenged him, but haven't heard back yet. :-)

  • shakaka: 1. They ...

    shakaka:

    1. They believe that God the Father (Elohim), Jesus and the Holy Spirit are separate beings.

    2. Elohim is one of many gods, but that this planet is his to reign over. So they claim that since they worship Elohim that they are monotheistic. But believing that other gods exist is polytheism.

    3. They believe that they can be exalted to godhood, so they too will be gods. There are a lot of Mormons who believe they will be exalted and are working towards that, so that too is polytheism.

  • We're not ...

We're not polytheistic. In my opinion, we Mormons are something nearer to enotheistic upon lineage but there's no proper word in English to say that we just believe that God is the Father of mankind in the very same sense a father is so to his sons. If they do well, they'll become like Him, but He will always be God to them.

fairenough999 - "God couldn't handle it if people knew the truth?"

*Paul taught and Jesus showed us by his example that it is not always wise to tell things that might be misunderstood by people. Milk comes before meat. Plus - there are things that are simply not important. Before I joined the Church I was fascinated with the theory that God is an alien from space. Do you think I am being deceitful when I omit this fact as I teach the gospel to people or act in my Church calling?

  • void24601 - The ...

void24601 - The text transl. by Joseph Smith from the gold pl. contains no claim that all Native Americans are descendants of the Lamanites. I used to think the events recorded there took place all over S. and N. America until someone pointed out that there are specific references to the size of the Nephite country. It was pretty small.

BTW - I am not saying that it is not true that the Lamanites are not "principal ancestors of the American Indians". I am just saying - Mormon didn't claim it.
