The makers had obviously thought all that I explained a few posts ago and assumed that the audience would be intelligent enough to guess what happens during the scene.

Indy obviously didn't see anything in front below except darkness, and the actual bridge couldn't be seen because it was mixed with the background and so he didn't have any choice but to do what the diary told him - take a big step, and when he did that he reached the bridge. If he had taken a small step, he would have felt nothing in front of him and possibly fallen.
