Fletcher Capstan Tables

The expanding table shown here is the result of many years of development, but follows a line of history of more than one and a half centuries. This, the Fletcher Capstan Table, is the only table in the world with its unique properties.

It is a circular table which, when rotated at its outer perimeter, doubles its seating capacity, yet astonishingly remains truly circular.

The expansion leaves are stored within the table and, in just four seconds, smoothly and quickly emerge upon rotation, rising and radially expanding outwards as the entire top is turned through 30˚. Existing tables can seat six persons when small, and twelve or more when expanded, but there are other design possibilities.

All Capstan Tables are exclusively designed and built, and each one numbered. Careful consideration is always given to a table's location and components are made to the highest standards. Nautical tables are so constructed that they are able to resist a harsh marine environment to the point that they may be positioned permanently on an exposed deck.

Read about the genesis and history of the Radially Expanding Table.

  • I love this table. ...

I love this table. It's memorizing watching it expand. I know the design elements aren't really that difficult to make this table, but still the simplicity of the design make for a beautiful and complex presentation.

Plus the finish is nice! :)

    Amazing work!
The table is perfectly round when expanded. When closed, due to the different radius,it isn't perfectly round but if you notice there is an special shaped ring that covers the external part, giving a perfectly round shape!U can see it better if u visit the productor's site and have look at the photos!Really genious

  • Hi there,i've ...

Hi there,i've noticed this statement too...i think when the table is expanded it is perfectly round.unfortunately the video quality is poor but if you go to the 19th second of the video u can notice that when the table is about to open it isn't completely round. The solution(in my opinion)is that external ring that comes up at the end of the closing fase, covers this imperfection and gives a perfectly round shape even when the table is closed

  • 3) I take issue ...

    3) I take issue with the statement that the table "remains perfectly round," as this would mean the radius of the edges of the pie shapes would have to actually morph as the table opens up. The table needs to be slightly less than perfectly round before it opens up, or after. My guess is that the actual radius on the parts is averaged between the two states.

    1) Amazing work of engineering and craftsmanship

    2) As for price, their website says about $50,000 to $70,000, which actually sounds about right for something sold in few numbers with that much intricate engineering. Remember that things like cars are only affordable because so many are built (efficiencies of mass production). These are essentially custom works.
