I can see the benefit in students learning the fundamental concepts, instead of memorizing algorithms, but that's what an algorithm does: makes it fast.

Your way is simply the same algorithm, except elaborating excessively on place values, and weaving it into a story. What annoys me even more is how the effiency of the algorithm is discarded just because place value is not explicit. The story is unnecessary, and a lot of students already know about place values.

i'm with you on the truth sets you free and God does exist, but our psyche as well as our brain are in constant stimulation, ... anyway.. you might be right as far as sticking with the truth even in digits the best statement of all was that math really is easy it's just how you teach it to others that truly makes the difference. it's like i know i'm good in math but yet i struggle sometimes .. but hey, if i don't own the problem i don't own the solution!
