About the performer:

Jayashree Jangam is a Kathak dance performer and teacher. She runs her own school of Kathak dance in the name of "Nrityakunjan" in Pune, India.

She has held the position of Principal of Kala-Chhaya, Pune from 1981 to 1987 - During this time she has taught degree holders and foreigners too.

During her stay in Baroda, she was appointed as a Kathak Dance lecturer in the Faculty of Performing Arts of MS University, Baroda (1989-1990)

Her Gurus have been:
Late Shri Balasahed Gokhale, Shrimati Prabha Marathe(Founder Director of Kalachhaya. Pune) & Guru Shri Munnalal Shukla Jee (Kathak Kendra, New Delhi)

She has training of Lucknow tradition for 18 years - and has been awarded National scholarship from the Cultural Ministry - India, for three years for higher training in Kathak dance at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi. She learnt fine nuances of Kathak under her Guru Shri Munnalal Shukla Jee.

She has given numerous solo performances all over India - Tabla wizard Ustad Zakir Hussain has accompanied her twice on tabla - which speaks of her ability.

She has also choreographed many different items like "Chaturang", "Mayur Nritya", "Taal Parikrama" & "Earth & Heaven", which has been specially appreciated by the audience.

She regularly conducts Lec. Dem and workshops at different Kathak dance institutes in Maharshtra, India. She has taught many students including foreigners.

She was recently invited to perform at Shri Chitresh Das Jee's Kathak Dance School - "Chhandam" in Kolkotta

She is back to her native place Pune and is associated with Kala-Chhaya, a well known Kathak dance institute of Pune, India

    Well,yes,it's absolutely true that art is dificult,but if we give up the criticism...it means the art itself will not grow higher and higher and higher... as for me,i like this video,as the dancer is graceful and beautifully joining the singers. Kathak dance has slow parts and fast parts,this doesnt mean that one is less beautiful than another.

    Speed should not be a criteria for beauty. The mujhra performed by Rekha in the Hindi film, "Umrao Jaan", is "slow" but still beautiful. Khaiyyam's music in both "Umrao Jaan"(1981) and "Razia Sultana" are "slow", but still beautiful.
