By kkat5528 [Affiliate User] 1223735305 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemovePretty much, Aikido's more about how you generate the power to perform the technique than the technique itself, hence the "there are no techniques in Aikido" thing.
Most Aikido techniques are taken from Daito Ryu, but Ueshiba also studied Judo so I suppose he could have taken Koshi nage from there.
Aikido and judo are about the same age. Jigoro Kano and Morihei Ueshiba knew each other. Both were masters of older schools before developing their own, modern arts. Kano wanted to make something you can compete in to make you develop without getting injured permanently => judo. Ueshiba wanted to develop effective method of self-defence that does not cause permanent injuries, but he thought that competition would be against budo principals and reject the technical variations.

It is generally used in a defensive manner, but it can be used in offense. The attacker doesn't even have to make first contact to get thrown into a very damaging high fall technique.
By gregtestagent [Affiliate User] 1223650963 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAikido is actually applied to most stand up attacks. This would include punches, kicks, strikes, etc. The grabs are easier to learn in the beginning, and afterward, you learn how to apply that information to other forms of attack. It's like in Brazilian JuJutsu, at first you learn the information with a gi, later you learn to modify it without at gi. Same principles.
