Aussie music legend PETER ALLEN (1944-1992) got his big break on the Australian TV pop show BANDSTAND in the early 1960s, as part of a duo act THE ALLEN BROTHERS, with Chris Bell. In 1962 the Allen Brothers started an extended tour of Asian clubs and hotels. In Hong Kong in 1964 they were seen by JUDY GARLAND (on her way back to London after her disastrous Australian visit). Beguiled by the young men's charm and talent, she appointed herself their manager and flew them to London, where Peter Allen became engaged to Garland's daughter, Liza Minnelli. In 1965 the Allen Brothers appeared with Garland on CBS TV's ON BROADWAY TONIGHT, and were her support act for concert engagements in Canada and the United States. They made their American club debut supporting Garland at the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. In 1967 Peter Allen married Liza Minnelli. To celebrate, Liza and the Allen Brothers played an enormously successful season at the fabled Chequers nightclub in Sydney - and made a triumphant return to the boys' alma mater, TCN 9 Sydney, in a BANDSTAND special featuring Liza, Peter and Chris. Here's the finale trio number!

Liza met Peter Allen in Hong Kong in 1964.They fell in love & married in 1967 but drifted apart in the 1970s.You can see how smitten Liza is with Peter here.He was equal in talent with her but he never made the big time.

  • She also happens to ...

She also happens to be a GREAT actor - Tony Award 1965, Best Actress Oscar Nomination 1969, Best Actress Oscar 1972, hello! And her comic performance with Dudley Moore in ARTHUR is superb. She inherited some extraordinary genes from both her parents.

  • Very well said! I ...

Very well said! I also found it incredible to watch her growth and evolution as an artist and personality through the end of the 80s and into the early 90s. She produced some unbelievably great work during that period, too. People want to put her in a box, but the shades, colors, and depth are not to be denied.

  • The bit that's hard ...

The bit that's hard to explain now is how Liza's whole personality and performance style - edgy, bittersweet, wide-eyed, manic, fearful, hopeful - completely reflected the zeitgeist of the late 60s and 70s.

They weren't really brothers. I believe Chris is no longer in the Biz but living happily somewhere on the (beautiful) North Coast of NSW (between Sydney and Gold Coast). Anyone know anything more detailed..?

  • Liza's outfit is ...

Liza's outfit is very similar to Judy's "Born in a Trunk" one. I wonder how Liza would feel seeing this footage- of her and Peter so young, and knowing how it turned out. What the narrative doesn't mention is that it was actually Judy's courtisan (later husband) Mark Herron who first discovered the Allen Brothers, and recommended the act to Judy.

  • It is time for Liza ...

It is time for Liza to be honored with a Kennedy Center award/tribute. She is today's Miss Show Business. Who else can you think of who has had a career nearly 50 years (46 to be exact) in length, and is still going strong? Liza has brought the world so much entertainment, it is time for the world to give back. To see what Liza is up to these days, go to her website.

seriously, the greatest concerts i ever saw were Peter Allen (in cabaret at the Melbourne Hilton, 1978) and Liza (at the Palais, St Kilda, 1980). They really are my (and Bob's!) biggest influences.
