before i start flaming on you, i'll reformulate my question: you are assuming that this f-16 is going supersonic, what evidence do you have to defend this assumption?

this isnt even close to 500 mph. this is around takeoff speed at the fastest. around 350 at the highest

Not true. It varies slightly with the atmospheric conditions in the area where you're trying to break the sound barrier. Although, in general; It's always going to be about a ground-speed of 760MPH. At altitude, you may be going "slower", yet still go Supersonic; That's due to the pressure at Altitude being much lower. Thus, Jet Engines are much more efficient, and don't need to be pushed as hard to achieve the same feats.

Mach 1 refers to the speed of sound in earths atmosphere, which is 761.2 mph. As long as you're in earths atmosphere Mach 1 will always be 761.2 mph regardless of elevation.
