In 1996, 26-year-old Peter Hessler arrived in Fuling, a town on China's Yangtze River, to begin a two-year Peace Corps stint as a teacher at the local college. Along with fellow teacher Adam Meier, the two are the first foreigners to be in this part of the Sichuan province for 50 years. Expecting a calm couple of years, Hessler at first does not realize the social, cultural, and personal implications of being thrust into a such radically different society. In River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze, Hessler tells of his experience with the citizens of Fuling, the political and historical climate, and the feel of the city itself.
Over the course of two years, Hessler and Meier learn more they ever...
I am currently living and teaching in Fuling as a Peace Corps Volunteer. I would like to get in touch with Peter Hessler. Any suggestions?

I am a native from Fuling, China. When I read 'River Town', the precise description of my hometown and people there made me really homesick. Very good author indeed.

I'm a filmmaker, photographer and teacher of high school film and photography..recently retired and doing film full time. I loved watching you on video and absolutely hated the camera work w/ three bald heads in the foreground and an empty screen in the background. It is truly a testament to your appeal as a speaker that pulled that off. Any plans to visit Ann Arbor for your next book tour? Or is that wishful thinking? Pam LeBlanc
Peter- I've been trying to find whatever you wrote re the Earthquake, yet afraid that it might have struck too close to your Peace Corps Assignment.Today I came across your Youtube piece. I teared up when I saw that it has impacted your community in Fulong. I'm a great fan of yours. I'm also glad to see that the "toothbrush" reference is still alive. I was in Peace Corps 1967-70, in Borneo. I feel we may have had similar experiences. Please keep in touch w/ those students. Pam LeBlanc

I was very impressed w/ Hessler's "River Town." I can't wait to read "Oracle Bones."

I just finished River Town and I'm already very fond of Mr. Hessler's writing. I can't wait to read Oracle Bones and I'm glad to have this insight on Chinese culture and lives! He is a very frank and often humorous writer who understands the world around him and relates to both the subjects in his book and the readers. This video was a good find!

He's an excellent writer and he gives you the foreigner's perspective, on how frustrating it can be sometimes, but also, how funny it can be, while living abroad. Overall, he has that rare ability to not take himself too seriously, but is passionate about the details and the journey. Anyway, I look forward to reading it. Peace!
