Well, they aren't. Not really, anyway. The largest animal to ever live on Earth is the Blue Whale, which is alive and well today in spite of over over hunting from whalers within the last century. As for most animals these days being smaller on average? It could be less oxygen in the atmosphere than during previous epochs, but many scientist attribute it to the fact that smaller animals don't need to eat as much and need less space to live; natural selection usually favors smaller animals.
