Ian Anderson - lead vocals, flute, acoustic guitar
Martin Barre - guitar, vocals
Glenn Cornick - bass, vocals
Clive Bunker - drums, percussion, vocals
John Evan - keyboards, piano, vocals

Lyrics:
(Instrumental)

Happy and I'm smiling,
Walk a mile to drink your water.
You know I'd love to love you,
And above you there's no other.
We'll go walking out
While others shout of war's disaster.
Oh, we won't give in,
Let's go living in the past.

(Instrumental)

Once I used to join in
Every boy and girl was my friend.
Now there's revolution, but they don't know
What they're fighting.
Let us close our eyes;
Outside their lives go on much faster.
Oh, we won't give in,
We'll keep living in the past.

(Instrumental)

Oh, we won't give in,
Let's go living in the past.
Oh no no we won't give in,
Let's go living in the past.

(Instrumental)

  • Yea Nami, this is ...

Yea Nami, this is some kind of mashup. The clips of yellow scarf ian are from the Too Old to rockn'roll TV special from around 76. There's a bit of 'The Whistler' close to the end, and the black and white bits look like 1991 Rocks on the Road video.

  • Sorry, John ...

Sorry, John Glascock appears at 1:02, not 3:17! It looks like a combination of clips from 76 and later. Perhaps 1982 like ibelden36 mentioned? Since you can't see who's on bass it's hard to tell but it's a good guess that Dave Pegg was on his right judging from Ian's hair~.

  • Although the video ...

Although the video identifies this song as being from 1969, Isn't the primary clip of Ian wearing a leather jacket with a yellow scarf actually from 1976? If you look closely there is a quick image of John Glascock at 3:17 so this would make this clip from around 1976 perhaps from the period of the "Too Old To Rock and Roll To Old to Die" album.

  • "Now there's ...

"Now there's revolution but they don't know what they're fighting"- Who says history doesn't repeat itself? Thank you Jethro Tull for giving me all you got for my whole conscious life. I've enjoyed this music since I could recognize what music is. May God bless them all...

  • Ouch! I just ...

Ouch! I just watched another youtube offering of Living in the Past and Ian introduces it as "5/4" after all. Mea Culpa. I recall a drummer friend in my past talking about "5/4 with an alternating 2/4 and 6/8 feel", but we all know drummers are from a different planet anyway LOL.

  • Yes, "terri", I've ...

Yes, "terri", I've always counted it as 5/4. Tap your foot in time with the descending chords and you'll see. I'm no musician either, but IMHO, Living in the Past is not 5/4, but rather alternating 2/4 and 3/4 (or possibly 2/4 and 6/8). I count it as 1 2 123, 1 2 123. Whatever it is, it's uncommon and gives the tune its distinct rhythm. Can anyone real knowledgeable tell what's going on in Cream's NSU? Are Clapton and Bruce really playing in two different time signatures at the same time?

  • I'm no musician, ...

I'm no musician, ngiyaxolisa, but are you sure the bridge in Cream's 'White Room' is 5/4 time? I love both songs and when I listen to them, I hear a time difference, but again, I'm not even close to being a musician (though I'm surrounded by them in my family :)
    Peace...

Isn't the intro and reoccuring bridge to Cream's "White Room" 5/4? Certainly the most often heard and best known example by far, is it not?

Interesting and unusual use of 5/4 or 10/8 time signature. Not many others, Paul Desmond's Take Five most notably.
