    In olden times, often the conductor would be the person who composed the song, and instead of writing rest after rest the conductor would cue that the section should play and how soft or loud, staccato or smooth they should play the part. Normally, they would rehearse enough so that they know their parts without the conductor, but they would still have him their to give him credit.
