In olden times, often the conductor would be the person who composed the song, and instead of writing rest after rest the conductor would cue that the section should play and how soft or loud, staccato or smooth they should play the part. Normally, they would rehearse enough so that they know their parts without the conductor, but they would still have him their to give him credit.

it is so that the orchestra is able to stay in time. if there was no conductor, then the whole orchestra would be playing the music at different paces aka it would sounds like S**t

wat i dont get with classical music is wat the conductor/guy @ the front is doin to help. do those actions with his arms help or he jus there taking the credit!?
