This is my little Vizsla Riley - a Hungarian pointing bird dog. Riley is running through some of his retrieving exercises. I can't take too much credit though Riley is a natural hunter, with and excellent ability to take training from his average trainer(me).

Vizsla's originated in Hungary and are known as excellent hunting dogs with exceptional personality. The breed was brought to the U.S. in the 1950's and became AKC recognized in 1960. Vizsla's almost became extinct in the 1940's due to the Hungarian Communist's who viewed the dogs as being too closely related to the upper class.

  • Any info

Great!! video by the way. Very impressive on the obidience you've taught him. I am looking to get a vizsla in the spring. I want him not only as a pet, but as a bird dog. Was all that training easy? How did you learn how to teach him? If you have time, I would like to talk/email you regarding the breed. Please let me know.

  • i don't know if you ...

i don't know if you picked out a dog yet.. i have a 12 year old vizsla who still, at times, acts like a puppy, they require much attention, they are extremely gentile, and mine gets along with cats very well, when he meets one he just wants to sniff it all day, the smell interests him. This guy really trained his vizsla well

They are kind and loving. but he is right, do not get one if you can't exercise it at least 4-5x per week, else they will be very unhappy and may start misbehaving

  • A Vizsla is not for ...

A Vizsla is not for the feint of heart. They go a million miles an hour every hour. They need constant excercise but are easily trainable, loving dogs - introduced to cats early and they'll get along fine with them. If you are looking for a pet/hiking buddy you may want to try a lab. Good luck!

Great dog and great job handling. I've been looking for a great dog for a pet and a hiking buddy This dog looks like it could be both. Do you think this breed could do well with cats? Any insight you could offer would be great.

  • I took the ...

I took the information directly from the American Kennel Club's website for the Vizsla Breed. That's good enough for me. They are also known by the following:Hungarian Pointer and Magyar Vizsla.

I could find no mention of the breed being associated with "Turkic Lands"
Reference: AKC, Vizsla Club of America, and the Hungarian Vizsla Society.
Good luck with your V, they are great dogs.

  • By the way, Riley ...

By the way, Riley is fantastic, glad he is better now. our Vizsla girl was doing (no-kill) retrieving practice only yesterday! I don't agree with most hunting (unless for food) but her genetics dictate that she must retrieve and it is a great way to keep her fit.

  • The near extinction ...

The near extinction happened in Hungary in 1920, the Soviet troops were not here until 1945, so you are 25 years out of date, full Stalinism wasn't until 1949. this had nothing to do with class, it just became unfashionable in the early 1900s and the breed dwindled. Did you know that the V. was originally from Turkic lands the word "Vizsla" comes from a turkic word for "seek" and this dog was the preferred dog of Islamic warriors, wonder if the religious-right owners in the US would like that!

Thanks! Riley is just now 3 and is small for his age too. At 6 mos, on a Sunday morning he dug out of the backyard and was run over by a car - breaking his neck. He was within a few hours of being put down by the vet BUT with a board certified orthopedic surgeon and alot of rehab he has bounced back to 100% - I just finished paying the vet bill!
