Hi, this is street lamp light comming through my window at night. i adjusted window shutter so that light becomes similar to slit i.e. thin line of light. High Popwer Sodium Vapour lamp is used as street lamp
in our area in india.
Spectrum is when light get difracted usnig grating but normal scientific gratings are costly and requires proper setup.
here i used normal CD as grating by holding CD against wall and allowing narrow line of light to fall on CD surface such that it splits the light into colors by which it is actually created.
notice the two bright yellow lines very close to each other they are peculiar to sodium vapour lamp.
you can experiment with more light sources such as mercury lamp, flouroscent lamp, candle, sunlight etc. to get their respective spectrum.
i know this is not scientific method but once you know how to use CD to diffract light it will be enjoyable as well as an self learning experiance.
enjoy
