This video has been produced by UNICEF to save the lives of babies by making sure they have what they need to begin breastfeeding in the first few moments of life. And what they need is to be placed on their mother, naked skin to naked skin, and left to get on with it.

Do make sure you stay with it until you see the latch happening at the end.

All babies are born to breastfeed, and as you can see, come with the instincts and skills hardwired. Unfortunately, many modern birth practices disrupt this process and prevent it happening. Baby is taken from mother, washed, dressed, and handed around. Well meaning helpers try to push baby onto the breast, or force it to open its mouth before it is ready. Sometimes the baby is trying, and someone will push the back of the baby's head up onto the breast - would you do what was wanted if someone treated you like that? Drugs from modern births pass into the baby's bloodstream, and babies can come out sleepy and disorganised. Sometimes it's a day or two before baby 'wakes up' and by that time, damage has been done by pushing the baby and stressing out the mother.

If your baby doesn't achieve this 'miracle' in the first few moments of life, don't despair! You're not alone! Many mothers have sleepy and uninterested babies and go on to a happy and successfull breastfeeding relationship.

Protect your milk supply by stimulating your breasts and emptying them regularly, and keep baby naked skin to skin on your chest. Babies can find your breast at any point in the first few weeks, so Don't Panic!

    I said the exact same thing..."That's amazing." Who knew??? I would have never believed it unless I saw it...instinct is extremely powerful, apparently even in human babies. Too bad this is kept from women in the West...I'm sure many would want to allow it.
    I am glad I breastfed my son at all, but this would have been a wonderful experience.

    Oh gosh yes! Anything is better than none at all. She got life saving immunity boosts from the the little you were able to give her. I'm so sorry you were so completely failed. Mothers need a proper care and management regime if there are early difficulties, and with some women, if supply isn't established by expressing and emptying the breasts in the first week or so, they may never gain a full supply. *hugs* If you have a next time, it will be different! You know now, and can get help. :-)

    wow that's good to know. i had a c-section in feb (my first baby) and she almost died...she was very sick, i wasn't able to nurse her until she was over a week old. my milk never came in fully, and i was literally dried up by 8 weeks (plus i had a raging infection of my c-section that required another hospitalization). it makes me so sad and sick that i couldn't do more for her. even though she barely got 1/4 of an ounce at a time, it was better than nothing right?

    Good maternity clinics are now supporting mothers with c-sections in breastcrawl. Given the wound, it's a more delicate art! But it can be done. :-) Glad you had such a happy outcome.

    Wow! A beautiful video, and again I am floored at this driving instinct that will take them to the breast every time! They don't even need prompting at the nipple - the drive is so strong! And to think industry was getting in the way of this natural life sustaining impulse by telling women the bottle was the only way! What assholes. Also, this little girl is so alert and energetic.
