The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that 218 million children between the ages of five and seventeen work in developing countries. Of these, 122.3 million children work in the Asia-Pacific region, 49.3 million work in Sub-Saharan Africa, and 5.7 million work in Latin America and the Caribbean. Most working children in rural areas are found in agriculture; many children work as domestics; urban children work in trade and services, with fewer in manufacturing and construction.

Child labor ranges from four-year-olds tied to rug looms to keep them from running away, to seventeen-year-olds helping out on the family farm. In some cases, a child's work can be helpful to him or her and to the family; working and earning can be a positive experience in a child's growing up. This depends largely on the age of the child, the conditions in which the child works, and whether work prevents the child from going to school.

i agree child slavery should be totally forbidden. but, travel to india and see for yourself how lots of poor families live there. they cant survive without additional earnings from their children, think about that.

  • harsh reality ...

harsh reality really, when WE are living off the fatta the land, and seeing 3/4 of the world starving for food, water, shelter etc, SHAME, I feel betrayed by humankind, I kind of feel that I don't want to be a human anymore if possible, coz WE ALL KNOW WHY THESE KIDS AND poor countries are suffering, it's simply coz the western countries want to get richer, and everyone HIDES THIS ISSUE by blaming different religions, BUT NO ONE (who is influential) DOES ANYTHING.

  • you let your ...

you let your daughter do this!!! Dumb ass leaders teach dumb ass things and then say this is normal. Do you think those government leaders are gonna let there kids work like that. They have normalized this behavior. Kids need an education and should be kids not adults at five years old. The government needs to take care of its people or else hand it over to another nation that knows how to take care of its children better. Not regect them.
