montage of cheesy male strippers on US daytime TV. Phil Donohue was a fine TV journalist with a wide-ranging daytime talk show. But in the 80s, these shows found themselves competing with the soaps - where shirtless heroes were catching the eyes of female viewers. Producers spotted a new social phenomenon - male strippers. And putting them on the show, pretending it was a journalistic exercise, was actually about attracting women viewers. And it worked. Here in the UK, Donohue was a middle-of-the-night filler, so I don't have much footage. But this montage, which puts the male strippers on the same level as their female counterparts, stands for the dozens of TV talk show appearances by those big haired, oiled up, muscle bound hunks of the 80s.
