STS-115 Space Shuttle Atlantis blasts off from Kennedy Space Center Florida. Near the end of the clip you can see the vapor cloud as the shuttle breaks the sound barrier. This was shot by a good friend of mine, he was kind enough to get me that close to the pad, then run the camera as I watched.

    NASA prefers to set a max g limit during ascent of no more then 4.5g on any vehicle carrying people reentry g loads limits are similar.
    The shuttle never exceeds 3.5g during nominal operation.

    The closest public place possible is the NASA Causeway. 6.5 miles away. Second closest is the NASA Visitor Center, but you do not have a clear view of the shuttle on the pad.

    The human body can sustain 12 or more G's, but only for a very breif period of time. Allso as Scotracer pointed out they are on thier backs so they can tolerate a higher G level for longer period of time than if they were upright.
