    Mojoelem,
    (3) Lord, you gave me food for thought! I myself am a straight overweight Christian Protestant Romanian Jew who watches TV after midnight and likes fastfood and it never occurred to me to put it all down on my business card as an English teacher! Let me see what I can do -- for the record, you know.

    Mojoelem,
    (1) I can't help wondering how incredibly mean people can be! I've just read all those comments about Engelbert's "concealed" ethnic origin and "safe", "non-original", "syrupy" style. I can even imagine you sitting in the pub with the tough boys and telling them, over a glass of whisky, the "truth" about this soft "pretender" who gets so much credit for nothing -- just "for the record", of course.

    Mojoelem,
    (2) The (or your?) "record" would have been right, I guess, if he had recommended himself like "Hi, I'm Engelbert Humperdinck and, you know, this is not my original name, I'm not even 100% British (actually I have a little natural tan) and I certainly hope you'll like my music because this is what I do, this is why I'm here." Now wouldn't this have made all the difference in the world?

    (1) But how "lucky" they are for having you to tell their story! Mojoelem,

    I personally don't care whether he's half caste or not...I am mixed blood, myself...some of my ancestors "came over on the boat, and some met the boat!" I'm very proud of my Native American blood, even though I am fair-skinned & blue-eyed. Engelbert is one of the most beautiful men I've ever seen, with the most beautiful voice...and both continue to hold true for today, as well as in the past.

    the pictures in his book show short--white--british parents? Why would he hide this? Aside from a name change (which I would not have done even for fame...........)Is this a reason NOT to KNIGHT Engelbert?

    moseymama;
    You've got to be joking! Apart from the gimmickry which they ALL tried Tom Jones has one of the greatest, most powerful voices of ALL time and can sing every genre( rock, blues,opera,soul) of music, not just cheap,easy ballads.
    Tom takes chances with his voice and doesn't play it safe with songs that have just 4 chords and a limited melody line.

    memphis77;
    Engelbert really copied an early 60s UK singer called Eden Kane (real name Richard Sarstedt)..Eden's brother is Peter Sarstedt who had the hit "Where do you go to my lovely?". Edn Kane is also on 'youtube'.
    Today Engel reminds me more of Don Ho.

    sandikki;
    Other notable anglo-indians apart from EH include Ben Kingsley(real name Khrishna Banji)
    Cliff Richard,Melanie Sykes,Norah Jones,Vivien Leigh, Alistair McGowan, Freddie Mercury, former 1997 "Miss World" Diana Hayden, Peter Sarstedt, Glen Duncan (superb author).
    I am PROUD of my heritage, not ashamed, but it's sad why so many of the above had to hide it and claim to be "white". Why?

    sandikki;
    It's a derogoratory term bestowed upon us by the Brits similar to "N****r " was given to the negroes. If you don't believe me just type in "anglo-indian" into your websearch and check out what the true definition is, what is meant by "half caste' AND the list of anglo -indians (including Engel & even Boris Karloff) that had to HIDE their identity.

    LindaFairbairn;
    Most westerners aren't aware of anglo-indians. We were a Christian community of half Indian/half Europeans living in India.(NOT white!) We were 'tolerated' by the ruling Brits for 200 yrs but had priviledged positions because of our official skills.
    In 1947 when India got independance the Brits left and we were in political limbo.

    We're only a minority (few thousand). Back in the 50s one had to have partial blood ties with Europe in order to emigrate. Most did.

    jojoman73;
    Yes, it was unseemingly tacky but at the time Engelbert was in stiff competition with Tom Jones, who was also pushing the envelope..BUT not as far as Engel was.

    sandikki;
    You mean i should "lighten up" like Engel did with his complexion?
    I'm not the one finding fault it's just that it's hard to see someone sell his soul just to appeal to the UK/USA market.
    I'm not the one who is racially paranoid..at the moment it's Britain & the USA.
    Let's hope Engel doesn't run out of face makeup or else he'll be stopped at the border and interrogated for 18 hrs.

    Stewiewie;
    Ahem..actually it's Engel who's done the "lightening up". He bleached his black hair and did a 'Michael Jackson' to his complexion!
    It seems a shame that Indian performers have to appear "white" in order to be accepted.
    They're living a lie.

    Engels got a great, classic voice and was even a superb saxophone player..but for the record let get things straight about his nationality.

  • LindaFairbairn; ...

    LindaFairbairn;
    Engel has had alot of work done to tone his colour and features. Just look at his early "natural" 1968 clips. Does he look white to you?
    He has concealed his true nationality (like Cliff Richard & Hollywood actress Merle Oberon) because it hindered ones career.
    Merle Oberon even went as far as to introduce her own mother as being her "servant' (because her mum was dark).
    It doesn't matter what his "book" says.

    LindaFairbairn;
    No, he's not white!(not that it matters but to English folk it DOES) I should know..i am the same nationality as Engelbert and knew him back in his early days in Croydon.
    Anglo-Indians are NOT white, we're half caste..we're called 'pakis' by you Brits.
    It's not MY term but one that was coined by Brits.

    I have a friend who was called on stage in October, and believe me, she is still walking on air! Yes, he is 72 (will be 73 in May) and is a very handsome, sexy, ultimate performer. I have seen him many times, and he always gives a fantastic performance...the best!

    Why shouldn't he "chat up the white women"...he's white, too. What American accent? He's British, born of British parents who were living in India at the time of his birth. "Read the book" as Engelbert says. So he had some affairs...that's between him and his wife...no one else's business.

    Engelbert has a 3-1/2 octave range. I've seen both in person, and believe me...Tom Jones is NO Engelbert...he charged more, did half the length of performance, is younger, and not nearly as good a singer, or entertainer. Not to mention the fact that he doesn't have the looks any more. Engelbert still has the looks, voice, moves...you name it. And that was as of 2 months ago!!!
