i have asked the same question myself my friend. the fact of the matter is that NOTHING is for certain. ALL religion and ALL science is based upon what has been learned by others prior, and trusting their word to be true. to truly prove one thing, you have to prove countless others in the process, and the chain never ends.
in the end, NOBODY knows when the world will end. some people think it's 2009 Because of CERN, the Hindu believe it is TRILLIONS of years from now.

There is a gigantic black hole at the centre of our galaxy and black holes can evaporate by the production of Hawking radiation but neither has a lot to do with the Mayan calendar.
The magnetic pole shift is currently happening. Many areas will receive extra solar radiation during the sunspot maximum in 5 years. Not likely fatal but it will increase skin cancers etc.

The Myan long count calender has predictions all the way to Oct. 21 4772, suggesting they did not believe the world would end in 2012. 2012 to them signals the end of the fourth world and beginning of the fifth world.

I personally believe it will involve a pole shift. Probably not a pleasent thing to live through.
