The 1948 Israeli War of Independence began when the United Nations decided to partition Palestine into separated Jewish and Arab states. The Arabs were not staisfied with the deal, as they wanted Palestine to be for Arabs only. They said that they would "fight for every inch of our country." Riots ensued almost immediately after the Partition Plan was approved. Arabs were able to take over many British military bases, and used the weaponry they acquired to launch attacks on Jewish communities. Jewish militias fought back, and after the British left Palestine, Israel was declared a state.
The 1948 War of Independence was a conflict that was instigated by the proposition of a compromise. For that reason, the topic is consistent with the theme of "Conflict and Compromise," though the order in which the two take lace in my topic is not identical to the order of the2007-2008 National History Day theme. The compromise occurred before the conflict.

  • Back then you had ...

Back then you had your Arabs and your Jews and both could've been called Palestinian, but the more exact terms were Palestinian Arabs and Palestinian Jews. Since the establishment of Israel the Arabs in the region have taken the term Palestinian to mean only themselves but we know this was not the case. Before 1948, it was mainly the Jews who were called Palestinians. Arabs just called themselves Arab. Now they call themselves "Palestinians". That does not change history.

  • Whats this land ...

Whats this land thievery you're talking about? Before Israel claimed statehood, which was APPROVED by the UNITED NATIONS btw, The land that is now Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza and Jordan belonged to the British under the Mandate of Palestine, before that it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and before that another Empire and before that and so on. There was never an independent Palestinian state. In fact before 1948, there was no Palestinian identity as it is now.

  • This video was ...

This video was well-produced and factual. It makes clear that Arab attacks were IMMEDIATE. It was the Arab League who said YOU MUST FIGHT, WAR IS THE ONLY OPTION! So, now they get war. They should be happy rather than crying like big boobaskas!
