  • Nowadays NOTHING ...

Nowadays NOTHING AND NOBODY in this world is PURE. Even the United States has become a melting pot of different races and cultures (Indians, Europeans, Hispanics, Africans, and even Asians)and nothing is wrong with that. That means just like the rest of the world...the Philippines having Indonesian, Malaysian, Chinese, Aetas, Spanish, and even AMerican heritage IS AS COOL AND FINE AS WELL. I'm proud being a Filipino but I am also proud of our MIXED HERITAGE.

    MABUHAY!

  • Thank you, it's ...

Thank you, it's worth at least giving it a thought. "Are we Hispanic or not", "what is Hispanic", "who owns the definition of Hispanic, and what is the final definition of Hispanic"? Hollywood? ;-(

  • Ok, I see. So ...

Ok, I see. So you're just promoting the hispanic influences of MANY countries and cultures all over, right? That's great then. I shall respect your presentation of information regarding this matter. Me, as a filipina, I will always have my pride as such and also take consideration of your information. :)

  • Hola! How proud ...

Hola! How proud should the Philippines be, so unique among its neighbors, closer to Hispanic America in folklore/cuisine, yet so geographically distant, and then the language... Nice video, I bought the whols Bayanihan suites here in Los Angeles, I have 'memorized' them all.

  • I am not gringo, ...

I am not gringo, but I studied my American history, because Venezuela is American. America is a continent. I am Venezuelan born and raised, I immigrated more than a decade ago to California. I found my vocation in promoting 'what makes us similar' (former Spanish colonies), rathar than promoting 'what makes us different'. Check 'hispanophobia' on the internet.

  • I promote folklore ...

I promote folklore from the Hispanic world, with no borders. I include Guam and Philippines, and in the future Marianas if I find, and Equatorial Guinea if I can. But the whole Spain+Hispanic America+Filipinas+Guam is already there, one and two groups per country, 'one big family, one big fiesta'. Check out my website proyectos-saluda DOT org

  • I see you're from ...

I see you're from the U.S., so if you studied your American history, you know how agressive and barbaric the Spanish were, so naturally, the indigenous peoples of the Philippines were hit hard. If you yourself are Filipino, perhaps you are a bit biased towards the Filipinos as "Hispanics" since all of your videos showcase only the Spanish influenced side of the Philippines. Just an observation. ;)

  • Yes, I'm very aware ...

Yes, I'm very aware that there are Spanish speaking peoples that are living in the Philippines as of today, and that the Spanish have had a great influence on Filipino culture. But would you REALLY put the Philippines under a "Hispanic" classification after considering all other aspects of the culture? And when I said "we're not hispanic" I was referring to the Philippines before the Spaniards had to come and introduce their new culture to the indigenous people of the land.

  • Yes you are ...

Yes you are definitely Hispanic, duh. A bunch of first generation Americans look very latino and native, yet they speak a IOTA of Castilian, zero, nada. You don't have to speak the language, to be Hispanic.

  • Agree. That is ...

Agree. That is filipino culture, TFC and WoWoWee. Needs cleanup, beyond absurd 'indigenisms' to revive prehispanic cultures (yes, including tagalistas). Needs to go back to the 333 years and BE PROUD, the genesis of the nation and that uncertain 'filipino identity'

  • Everything went ...

Everything went fine until the hispanophobia indented in Philippines popped up: "Settlers". The best your 'academics' come up with is 'conquistador'. And fryars 'were abusers and thieves'. The same type of terminology as "Magellanes, Portuguese", "Columbus, Italian sailor"... Anything to discredit Magallanes and Colón as SPANIARDS (what country did they search glory for), and to discredit 333 YEARS Spain changed Philippines forever...

Yeah, well. Wish we were a little less "unique" among our neighbors... Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, etc. all have much more attractive costumes. We get Imelda's beehive helmet. HAHAHAA! *sigh*

PS - I'm a Filipina-American Buddhist so I'd like to think my comments are unbiased re: the religious Christian Luzon vs. Muslim Mindanao issue. My family is originally from Luzon (and Catholic) but we have many really sweet muslim friends here in Washington, DC. And yes, I can still understand and read Tagalog so snarky comments in the mother tongue are understood - be warned! *smiling & a wink* ;)

  • Good comment. I ...

Good comment. I agree with you that both styles reflect authentic sides of filipino influences. However, I much prefer the Mindanao dance styles. If I'm not mistaken, the Filipino people actually DO come from indo-malayan stock and the dance styles seem to intuitively hark back to pre-colonial influences. Plus, it's just HOT, sexy, and unqinue from other indo-malay dances I've seen! The hispanized Luzon dances are almost embarrassing, corny even. The Latins do it so much better, they keep sexy.

  • There are many ...

There are many places in Philippines with strong Spanish influence. Language-wise, the three Philippine Chabacano places have the unmistakable Castillian twang: ZAmboanga, Cavite and Ermita,Manila. The Chabacano Ermitense (that is the lyrics of the music melody that accompanies this dance) is already extinct. There are very few residential houses in the "Spanish portion" of Ermita.

this is a fine example of the traditional culture of hispanized christian filipinos of luzon.just because it's not 'exotic enough' does not make it 'un-filipino.'is it right to say as well that because the culture of the moslem filipinos down south in mindanao contains islamic and indo-malayan elements they're 'un-filipino' as well?don't be ashamed of our unique, eclectic culture.
