Once you have control of the weapon, even if it is fired your hand is covering the shell ejection port which will cause the gun to jam eliminating the threat of being shot.
I see a lot of advice on grabbing the pistol by the barrel. But what now if the pistol goes off, the slider will move violently back and forth, won't that shred your hand and make you let go?
