How-To Triple Boot XP, Vista, Ubuntu Linux (Part 2)

  • Hey, i commented on first page about ...

Hi, just wanted to add it again here, that in order to install Vista into a dual boot like you did with XP already installed; U DO NOT need to do it from within XP, it WILL NOT mess up the boot loader at all, it will look eactly as yours did!

The only time U NEED to install Vista from within another OS (XP or Vista) was when you used an upgrade DVD....and then technically you are not entitled to do a clean installation.... (I KNOW HOW STUPID IS THAT?)
This is how you are (by license) supposed to install a Vista Upgrade DVD...from within XP. It then incorporates your XP product key etc into the installation and invalidates (idk if it really does) but u are then not supposed to install that copy of XP any more.
I THINK THAT's Bull$' so i just use the work around doing a clean installation (without registering it, on whatever hd or partition i want) booting from the BIOS & selecting custom install like u did the 1st time. Don't enter the product key, then after it is fully installed and running, from within that installation of Vista that you just did, run the DVD again.

This time select Upgrade.... Why because it won't let you register the Clean installation version you just installed (UPGRADE ONLY), so after you finish reinstalling the exact same thing over the top of itself from the upgrade button (from within Vista) you can then activate it once you get it all loaded back up and running. (Again that's why it also makes a difference whether you have the Full Retail Box or the Upgrade edition. With the full retail you can simply do the custom install once & then enter your product key no monkeying around.

WHY MICROSOFT WHY? A clean installation is SO IMPORTANT!

yeah, when i first installed Vista, the thing came on a DVD which I thought was kinda weird. Then, when I saw it took nearly 10GB on a clean install, i realized why it was on a DVD.
