As I recall an interview of Gary Rossington the Band nor Ronnie really had a problem with Neil Young. The song was meant to be a joke to poke fun at Young (Southern Man) and Former Alabama Governor George Wallace. As Rossington put it no was more surprised than Lynyrd Skynyrd that the song became a hit.

After listening to Southern Man I can clearly see why Ronnie would take offense. Thanks for the info!

Neil Young wrote the song SOUTHERN MAN. It basically portrayed all white southern men as racists. Ronnie Van Zant took offense to it and this song was born. The line "southern man don't need him around anyhow" is a classic. I love that whole verse.

i can play the beginning to this!!! it's pretty hard, but it's quick so it's easy to remember. i have the same guitar as the guy on the left.

The Neil Young verse is the coolest ever written! I'd put Ronnie Van Zant's writing talents up against anyone. That includes Lennon and McCartney. He never got the song writing credit he derserved because it was southern rock.
