    basically, the guy is put on death sentence. when the police officer asks him what his last wish was he wished for a piano. In the end when you hear the gunshot, it basically means he was executed. Now why did he ignore the girl? Mainly because he probaly didn't want her to keep thinking about him since he is going to anyway. He wanted her to move on.
