all you need is potassium iodide & sulfuric acid,
Please use caution if you try this experiment, toxic amounts of hydrogen sulfide will be produced. I really do not recommend anybody to try this who is inexperienced.
#1 make a saturated solution of potassium iodide
#2 slowly add consentrated sulfuric acid.( dont let the solution get hot, put it in ice to bring it to room temprature).
#3 after the reaction is complete wash the iodine crystals with lots of water untill pure as can be,
#4 dry the crystals on paper towel then put into sealed container.
where do you get H2SO4 and Potassium Iodine
By Randumshitstudios [Affiliate User] 1215861842 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is actually the contact process, normally used in H2SO4 industry. The catalyst used is normaly vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), and flankly I don't think you can get V2O5 in stores...
Besides, direct SO3 solvation in water is extremely dangerous, being SO3 even more water-withdrawing than H2SO4 itself. It would be better to dissolve SO3 in H2SO4 and make oleum.
to make sulphuric acid,
Making Sulphuric acid
Sulphuric acid is made in three steps.
Stage 1
Sulphur is heated until it melts. The liquid sulphur is burnt in air. It reacts with oxygen from the air to make sulphur dioxide gas. Stage 2 The sulphur dioxide gas is mixed with more air and heated with a catalyst. The sulphur dioxide reacts with oxygen to make sulphur trioxide. The catalyst speeds up this reaction. Sulphur trioxide gas dissolves in water to make sulphuric acid.
A way to understand this is realizing that H2SO4 acts as an oxidizing agent, following this equation
8I(-) + SO4(2-) + 10H(+) --> 4I2 + H2S + 4H2O
So, if you want to make "clean" hydroiodic acid (HI) from an iodide salt, you need a non-oxidizing acid. Phosphoric acid is a good example (H3PO4).
H3PO4 + 3I(-) --> PO4(3-) + 3 HI
HI evolves as a gas.
bubbling chlorine through an iodine solution works quite well
By mingmingnak [Affiliate User] 1214352207 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removedude i didnt understand, after you insert the H2SO4 you get HI acid but how did you get I2 from HI?! i know that if you add NaClO sodium hypochlorit to the HI you can get I2 crystals
By AMIT1477 [Affiliate User] 1213854336 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeyeah, I really dont like this method, I've done the chlorine bubbled through iodide salt it produces more iodine.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1213196725 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNice experiment. Although nasty, this reaction is very demonstrative about redox chemistry.
For obtaining I2, there are "cleaner" procedures, like oxidizing iodide solutions with nitric acid, or with permanganate in acidic solution. It would also be plausible to bubble chlorine gas throug iodide solution.
Im not sure of the hole prodedure but you need sulfur to make it
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1213035497 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow would you make sulfuric acid......
By cyanide444 [Affiliate User] 1213033630 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYea, I hate this procedure man. It releases H2S (UGH!). Iodine is easy via H2O2-route. However, drying the iodine is hard. I prefer to just buy my iodine . 250grams for about 20 EURO.
By tijgerjorri [Affiliate User] 1211530445 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis is the worst way to make iodine by the way.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1209590745 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeits my most recent uploaded video, check it out.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1206547004 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWhats your other method ?
By Jantv06 [Affiliate User] 1206536569 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removenot this method, but my other method is very noncostlty.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1206534954 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNice video, but do you think that its lucrative ?
By Jantv06 [Affiliate User] 1206262052 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo, Its possible, I've done it on a chemistry competition, but it isn't lucrative.

sorry to say,but it would be Virtually Impossible to make sodium in your home.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1206118367 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI need A video to show me how to make at home pure sodium metal from NaOH
By LucyiX [Affiliate User] 1206106512 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo matter if you use native NaCl?
By jmmatos23 [Affiliate User] 1205729885 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNo, it will give gaseous hydrogen chloride - colorless, fuming and corrosive gas with sharp smell (water solution is hydrochloric acid). Concentrated H2SO4 will not oxidize table salt into chlorine.
By JBird314 [Affiliate User] 1205683493 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOh thats weird. If you want chlorine, mix HCL and bleach. It will react very quickly producing a lot of chlorine gas, you should be careful. Film it and upload it to youtube if you can please =) thats how i get chlorine.
By jmmatos23 [Affiliate User] 1205680946 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI just tested it, Sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid both react very well with NaCl but it does not produce any chlorine that I could smell.
By Basco36 [Affiliate User] 1205669628 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI guess it will work. NaCl an KI are both halides of an alkali metal. It works too with potassium bromide, so why not whit salt? :)
By jmmatos23 [Affiliate User] 1205665795 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThats a logical question, and the thought hadn't even crossed my mind wether it would. It seems like it should, but I doubt it. I will test it to be sure.
