A Dorcy flashlight with a sony 16x red DVD laser diode. It is probably between 100-150mW. It cost about $55 to make. A 240mW one could be made for the same price.

  • I wouldn't suggest ...

I wouldn't suggest using a CD burner. The light is infared and if its 52x then it is more powerful. IR light is invisible and does not collimate with regular lenses well. So you could have no idea where the light is when you turn it on. I suggest going to stonetek . org and ordering a 16x DVD burner diode pre-installed ina housing.

Be careful where you post MW. That means MegaWatts.

use lower case m for mw~miliwatts.

Trust me, if you go around saying MW you WILL receive a LOT of negative feedback from youtube!

just being nice and pointing it out for you.

Well, the 16x diodes can go as high as 250mW. But the faster the DVD burner the less hard you will have to drive it to acheive higher power.

  • I'm not sure at ...

I'm not sure at what sopt size it will pop a baloon, but red lasers have a negative initial beam diameter so it diverges until it inverts. So you can find the smallest possible dot size if you needed to.
