The world of Brazilian football was again at Ronaldo's feet Monday, just hours after the veteran striker proved wrong those who doubted his chances of recovering from a third knee operation, a 13-month absence from the pitch and several kilograms too many.

With a header in injury time that led his current club, Corinthians, to a valuable 1-1 draw Sunday against archrival Palmeiras in the Sao Paulo state championship, Ronaldo sealed his status as the Phoenix of Brazilian football.

The goal softened the hearts of the demanding Corinthians fans and shut up sceptics in the media.

"Who still has the courage to doubt Ronaldo?" football commentator Mauro Beting wondered Monday in a column in the sports daily Lance.

The "Phenomenon" - as the forward is known - celebrated his goal as if it had been the first in his career. He ran around the pitch and climbed onto the fence that separates the players from the fans. A crowd gathered, and the fence broke, although no one was injured, and no one complained.

"The truth is it was very scary, because I called the fans to approach me and the fence was not sturdy enough. It was a bit of an irresponsible attitude," the striker admitted after the game. "I hope you will understand me, because at a moment like that the only thing you want is to celebrate."

"The plan is not yet finished. I need to improve the physical aspect and to keep working, but I am left with the feeling that I am on the right track and that this is only the beginning," he stressed. "This is only the first of many goals to come."

Almost all of Brazil's sports media shared Ronaldo's confidence Monday, and they praised his performance against Palmeiras.

"Not even the most enthusiastic admirer of the 'Phenomenon' could have hoped that his reunion with
good football and goals came in such an emotional, decisive, epic fashion," said the daily Folha de
Sao Paulo.

Now there is even talk of a return to the national team for the 32-year-old. Milan striker Alexandre Pato, who seems to be at the start of a career comparable to that of the Phenomenon, would certainly be in favor of this.

"I watched his recent performances on television," the 19-year-old told La Gazzetta dello Sport, "I'm very happy for him because he suffered a lot.

"He has already done a lot for the Seleçao, but I think he could still give his contribution. Brazil have many champions, but there is only one Phenomenon. Ronaldo is an idol and an example for me.

"He had a thousand injuries, almost all of them very serious, but always somehow managed to pick himself up and come back. He has an incredible character."

Ronaldo and Pato briefly played together at Milan before Ronaldo's injury in February of last year.

Dunga praised Ronaldo for his return to football more than a year after knee surgery, saying the striker will have his spot in the squad secured if he plays well again.

"If he becomes the Ronaldo of old, why not?" Dunga told Cultura TV late Monday.
"He has the will to become the great player that he once was," Dunga said. "He feels pleasure playing football."

Dunga and Ronaldo were teammates in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups.

Ronaldo's return to football has been praised across Brazil, including by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"He wasn't 100 percent ready, played five minutes, got five balls and was still better than everybody else," Silva said, according to the Folha Online Web site.

Flamengo fans were outraged at what they saw as his treachery in signing for Corinthians when news
of the move broke earlier this week. But by Friday, it seemed fans had moved from the anger to acceptance.

"He's washed up, you know. At the end of his career," said taxi driver Bernardo Souza Pontes. "It's not right, the way he left us, but it isn't a great loss, either."
