  • you should also ...

you should also cover the green food with more shredded paper, this helps prevent pests from trying to get into the bin. I shred every scrap of paper that comes into the house for the worms. Shredded paper makes great mulch for plants as well.

  • worms don't like ...

worms don't like coffee or tea ... its too acidic for them. They also don't like orange or lemons, onions or garlic. THey don't mind the garlic or onion peel, or banana, and other fruit ... just not citrus. Try again with stuff that worms like.

Hey Gardengirltv, exactly what type of kitchen scraps can you use? Becuase I tried it here at home (with egg shells, fruit peels, and coffe grinds) and it failed :( it didn't decompose.

  • Two nested 5 gallon ...

Two nested 5 gallon buckets work very well too. If the cabinet under your sink is large enough you can conveniently put them there for an easy place to keep the kitchen scraps coming. Expect to harvest about 1 quart of compost after 6 months with about half a cup of red wiggler worms and tossing a little more scraps than 7 banana peels/wk. I use shredded 'junk mail envelopes & flyer paper created by a straight-cut office paper shredder. I soak it, wring it out and use that for my worm bedding.

  • Yes. You shine ...

Yes. You shine light on them and the worms move away from the light. Pick out the stragglers and put them back in their bin. Then you harvest the compost, and repeat til you have gotten all of the worm castings. The process of sorting is not fun.

  • Great video as ...

Great video as always! Love the details. One question though. I didn't get where did you drill those holes? I gather some were in the bottom, but later it looked like some were around the top just under where the lid would be.

Thank you for all your wonderful videos!

Love the video! It always seems that there's never enough worms. I used nightcrawlers that I dug up when I made a vemiculture tank out of an old aquarium and they crawled right out of it. Yeah, I shoulda used a better lid. LOL It was attack of the wormites! LOL

Awesome! I can't wait to use this. But when I use the compost, do I have to sift the worms out and put them back into the vermiculture bin?
