O.K. ......... it's official. Pilots have nerves of steel; are highly skilled, and yet are expected to deal with ridiculous airport configurations while being grossly underpaid. But thank God the CEO's have their golden parachutes.

As an example, after 9/11, American Airline pilots took a 23% pay cut as was necessary becuase of what had happened. Currently, the Airline industry as a whole is soundly recovering. Top executives of American and her parent company AMR Corp. have received a quarter-billion dollars in AMR stock while pilots cannot secure pay increases which would match 1992 levels adjusted for inflation. I am so sick and tired of corporations which plead poverty while securing obscene

Here in the US there are many cheap airlines...I would rather fly with an airline that is well established. I have flown with a few airlines here..so far the best flights I've had are on United.

hanno, why do you think all pilots are underpaid? Yeah, deregulation stinks! And consider that Kai Tak was replaced because of it being an older airport as well as future safety concerns because of Hong Kong's future growth. And that Runway 13 IGS approach had to test a lot of flight crews' nerves...no room for error.

Good to hear your viewpoint..well said. Isnt it funny how a lot of people mistake Professionalism, and focus on the job as someone being 'rude' or 'arrogant'...These people never have had a job with heavy responsibility...I dont think an entire Airline and hundreds of passengers would want to know you are talking about last nights' episode of South Park rather then concentrate on landing! lol

And for Air Traffic Control workers..multiply the job responsibility and stress several times over. They have to make sure all those planes stay a safe distance from each other. You think this pilot isn't cheerful..air traffic controllers are all business too. They have to be.

Look, being an airline pilot is NOT an everyman's job. These flight crews have more responsibility than a nine-to-five office worker or factory worker. They have the SAFETY of several hundred passengers and flight attendants as a PRIORITY. And pilots earn a LOT more than an average nine-to-fiver.

IT's that way in every job don't you know? The guy who accualy DOES the work, is the one who gets to deal with all the bullshit, gets underpaid, and gets the shaft when the S**t hits the fan. While the guy who's name is on the building gets to sail his multi million dollar yaht to the caribean for christmas.

xxmyspace...the captain is nowhere near rude. He is acting exactly as his job dictates. He's responsible for the safety of the flight crew and passengers. There is cockpit protocol that is followed on takeoff, approach, and landing. Here in the US pilots have to keep personal conversation of any kind out of the cockpit during takeoff, approach, and landing. It's called 'sterile cockpit' in other words you better focus on your job.

it is estimated if 1000 people apply to become a pilot only 10 become one. this is because piloting is a very risky and hard job and only the very best upto 100% standered pilots are needed.
The pay is very good.

especialy when landing at Kaitak , part of the reason they made the new hong kong airport, Kaitak is just asking for disaster . no margin for error when landing or taking-off from Kaitak

A 747-400 captain with many years under his belt can definately make more than $180,000. In the old days 747 captains got paid as much as $250,000 a year, that's crazy. But deregulation and lame-ass lowfare airlines ruined that.

I do understand what you mean about the captain not being cheerful. Maybe he is not a cheerful guy. I really could not say because I do not know him. However, as a pilot, I can say that during the T/O, approach, and landing all of the focus is devoted to that particular operation. I as a pilot wait to be cheerful for the less demanding operations of the flight eg: During cruise

Perhaps there are many pilots who differentiate from this. I can only speak for my own experience.
