I Caught up with Matt as he rides The Union Pacific's famous 844 steam locomotive, built in 1944, is the longest-running steam train in America. It still runs on UP's mainlines today. July 20, 2008 taking 750 rail fans from Denver to the biggest rodeo in the world, Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming. This train is so popular that traffic jams form along the tracks when it runs, as people "chase the train." But the History Channel has a Helicopter that paces the train from as low as 20 feet! Watch as these guys try to harvest the corn while they get the shot of 844 hiballing through the great plains, Watch the History Channel
Extreme Trains eposode on Steam Train, this Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at 10PM ET/9C

We open with a shot at sand creek, and I didnt catch up again with her till after her Greeley service stop as she Hiballs to the Wyoming state line chased by the Helicopter from the History Channel I cant wait to see this show! All I want for christmas is a RR pacing helicopter,santa-LOL

Let's hope Union Pacific keeps 844 and 3985 running for years to come. Kudos to the UP for being the only Class 1 railroad left with an active steam program. Simply fantastic!

I'm just plain speechless right now. That first clip gives you a feeling I don't think anybody can explain. While the sheer power of the steam engine is seen on the outside by many, nobody gets to see what's underneath this extraordinary beast! This is favorited and if I could this video would get 1,000 stars!

Anyone know if that DD-40 was under power or not? 844 has plenty of power to deadhead the DD-40, but I'd be curious to know if one of the Centennials has been restored to service.

What did you use to mount the camera on? I do some train chasing too and would love to have one of those. Does it mount on the side window glass?

It seems as most of the liquids dropping off the passanger consist is the condisation off the Airconditinor's mounted under the right side so if you keep the cam just left of center and avoid a locomotive discharge it might work out Also I wouldnt push much more than even with top of rail for cam clearence
