Jacks and I enjoyed watching this film adaptation of Jane Austen's "Persuasion". In my opinion, this version is far superior to other productions. Made for British television and originally screened by the BBC in April 1995. The script and the acting are brilliant, and as a film its quality is very good. The main actors may look a little bit "old" at first glance, but they quickly grow on you. I love Ciarán Hinds.

Starring Amanda Root as Anne Elliot, Ciarán Hinds as Captain Wentworth, Sophie Thompson as Mary Musgrove, Corin Redgrave as Sir Walter Elliot, Victoria Hamilton as Henrietta Musgrove, Fiona Shaw as Mrs. Croft, and Susan Fleetwood as Lady Russell.

  • My problem is just ...

My problem is just with some of the cast. They must've been casting at a fugly convention. Everything else is superb!
I'm shocked I liked it as much as I did because if the movie doesn't click with me usually I shut it off, but I faced the storm & ended up pleasantly surprised.

Maybe I'm being overly cynical...I don't know, but when I see both Ciarán Hinds and Amanda Root on screen together I can't help but think of NAMBLA.

    and Orlando Bloom S**ks ! He's not good looking...gross!

  • Yeah so Root and ...

Yeah so Root and Hinds were a bit older than their characters but they played their parts well. Besides, films always use older actors to play parts; especially those dumb teen films where they're supposed to be 16 but the actors are like 30.

  • Looks really matter ...

Looks really matter much at all, especially seeing as everyone else in this movie aren't exactly the best looking. Looks aside, the actors did a great job and that's what counts. There are so many films out there with "good-looking" people but terrible acting(eg. Orlando Bloom. Good thing Legolas' lines were limited)

  • Well the actress ...

Well the actress that played her sister looked like a rat so I guess they had to cast someone fuglier than her..& in walks Amanda Root. The believability factor just isn't there when it comes to the love story. Amanda Root looks like a tarsier!
Anyway, I still enjoyed this adaptation. Loved the whole feel of it & the acting was great! However, The 2 main actors - thumbs down!

I AM a fan of the 2007 adaptation. Rupert Penry-Jones **swoon** & Sally Hawkins (a perfect Anne!) were ideal (IMHO).

  • Regardless of their ...

Regardless of their looks they did a great job. Anyway, Anne was supposed to have diminished in looks anyway. She was supposed to be plain especially in comparison to her sister Elizabeth. If she was beautiful that's have changed the whole story a long time ago.

  • Let me just put it ...

Let me just put it this way: great casting all the way! And anyone who watches the film and fails to recognise Anne's attractions - well, the DVD of 'Showgirls' should be cheaply available by now.

  • who casted this? ...

who casted this? Amanda Root looks like a prepubescent boy. I'm not one to harp on anyone's looks, but I just find it hard to believe that an unwed Captain in the Navy would wait 8 long years for THAT! And as mentioned in the description...they look OLD...like 40 or 45 yrs. old. Again...who casted this cause they should've been fired! lol

This version is soo realistic! It's as if someone accidentally put a camera in a room in 1790s! So cool! And the people are at least not unreal beauties, but normal people.

    that's cause you're a dumbshit!!

The younger actors can't act worth S**t !! They're only hired for looks and in hopes of bringing in some profit- for the directors know the adolescent dumb S**ts will fall for such low-quality, society-bred standards!

  • This is by far my ...

This is by far my favorite screen adaptation of Persuasion. The actors, Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds, are perfect in their roles and give moving and convincing performances. Jane Austen's original nuance and spirit are maintained. Most importantly, the beauty, subtlety, and incredible power of Anne and Frederick's love story is shines through, particularly in the stirring closing scenes.

    Thank you for posting.
