Abba won the Eurovision Song Contest at Brighton, England on Saturday April 6 1974 with Waterloo by 24 votes. It was the first time Sweden had won, and also the first time a group had won. Stig recalls "Most of the songs in the contest were boompa-boompa. We decided to write something that was more of a pop song and which would change the Eurovision Song Contest situation." The visual effect was very glam rock, with platform boots and satin costumes covered in glitter and sequins, designed by Inger Svenneke. Bjorn had a unique star shaped guitar made especially for the occassion, which he plays here. Bjorn recalls "My costume was so tight that I couldn't sit down in it. It was terrible and I cursed myself for not slimming a bit before wearing that thing. And afterwards, of course, I went on the strictest diet you can imagine."
The single Waterloo was released in UK on Friday April 5, the day before ESC. After their ESC victory, the single sold 15,000 copies within the first 2 hours in UK on Monday April 8. On April 10 Abba performed the song on Top Of The Pops. It then jumped up from 17 to 2 by the next week. The next day April 11 Abba flew to Hamburg and recorded this German performance for NDR/N3 tv. The song reached number 1 in England, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Spain and South Afica.
Waterloo was recorded in English, Swedish, German and French. A Spanish version was scheduled, but this was cancelled. The German version was recorded at Mackans Studio on March 15 and released on April 5.

Du has um mich gekämpft,
