The CD burning/reading diode from a DVD burner: Lasing threshold of this one is 40 mA. It was easy to find that out with my Apple iSight cam.
At 130 mA it burns through black plastic, and at 150mA (on 2 1,5 volt AAA Alkalines), it stings your skin in seconds. At 160 ma it lights a match. I let it on for minutes and it didn't became very warm. Maybe it's possible to use it with an even higher current, but because it's invisible and not as 'safe' as the visible red diode, i don't have use for it yet.
the diode used to read or write a dvd is visible, the one he is using is likely the CD diode from a combination DVD/CD drive. CD diodes are infrared, and mostly invisible. some people can see the beam but its very dim, DO NOT TRY TO VIEW THE BEAM DIRECTLY!! I would also like to point out that adding a pot in his circuit would have NO effect on the frequency of the light emitted by the diode, that is determined by the makeup of the diode crystal.

By ballpointpen86 [Affiliate User] 1207185070 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe laser only becomes visible red at higher frequencies,( 7-13hrz tends to be visible) the default setting on DVD burners is very low and does not burn or cut well at all as you can see he struggled, you should have placed a POT in the circuit would have made the beam "visible" and burned/cut much much better. At a high frequency/voltage ratio a DVD burner's laser can easily cut metal. Any and all lasers can be visible or invisible all depends on frequency.

By silntdoogood [Affiliate User] 1205189190 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe laser beam is the radiation, thats what they are talking about. So if you don't point the laser at yourself then you won't have a problem. There is no other radiation emitted, look up lasing on wikipedia if you don't believe me.

By silntdoogood [Affiliate User] 1205077709 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removestfu, yes, if you use the wrong laser, over power it etc, you will get radation xion! thats why theres lables on everything, dont poing in your eye dont expose to shin, go look at dells support page
By silntdoogood [Affiliate User] 1205023610 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveNever heard CD cases having lots of lead in them. The warning about laser radiation on a CD player is just warning you about the laser, because that is what is radiating.
