Dive right into triple-booting your computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista and Ubuntu Linux 7.10.
This 30-minute walk-through video tutorial (split into 4 parts) walks you through the partitioning and installation processes of Windows and Ubuntu.
Learn how to correctly configure your harddrive to handle all three operating systems.
Use this tutorial to simply dual boot between Windows XP and Windows Vista. Or between Windows and Ubuntu.
Use this tutorial to learn how to install Ubuntu without needing to reformat or reinstall your current Windows installation.
Why is this tutorial so long? I hate to leave people wondering "why...". I like to explain everything I do and why I do it. Only this way are people more knowledgeable about what they are doing!
Good luck in your booting endeavours!
This tutorial was done on the following system configuration:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.40GHz
Intel DG965WH Media Motherboard
ATI Radeon X550 Video Card
2GB PC6400 DDR2 RAM
8X Dual Layer DVD Burner
80GB 7200 IDE Maxtor Harddrive
17" Polyview LCD Monitor
480W Power Supply
I also wanted to point out that it does "technically" make a difference whether U use a "Full Retail" version or an "Upgrade" version of Vista.
B/c "technically" if you use an Upgrade you are not supposed to do a clean install but rather R supposed to upgrade over XP replacing it (to me that's Bull$'. BUT there are LOTS & LOTS of sites that explain how to do (as i also did) - with XP installed use a Vista Upgrade DVD to do a clean installation of Vista on another driver or partition etcetera... It simply requires installing it twice, over itself as an upgrade the second time. (not activating it until after you have it up & running the second time).
Just wanted to point out those 2 things...
Hi, u mentioned that it will not work if u try to install Vista from the BIOS (that it will mess up the bootloader). This is not correct. I just yesterday took a system with XP running, from the BIOS booted to CD and installed Vista in a dual boot set up. Vista recognizes XP and adds it to the bootloader that it takes over. Doing it that way (the same way as u did) is easier because if you install Vista 1st then XP you have to repair the bootloader. NOT A big deal but wanted to make that clearer.

namely debian, mandriva, unbuntu, and kubuntu.

This is what i've been looking for for a while!
If you install Ubuntu, it should automatically configure the grub for you. It will recognize that Windows has already been installed and will add it to the grub automatically. Now, if you install Windows AFTER Ubuntu, you'll need to manually edit the grub yourself. I'm a little unfamiliar with how to do this.

what about the bootloader/grub
i must config them manual??
I haven't tried it for 64bit, but they should be. You'd just have to download the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.
By reponzo01 [Affiliate User] 1212469698 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveAre the steps exactly the same for 64bit?
By devonharlan [Affiliate User] 1212446383 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat's actually a very good question. I'm sure you can. It's just a matter of partitioning your harddrive. Ubuntu has a very good partition editor that lets you do it without reformatting. You may have to edit your GRUB to boot to Windows later though. I'm not an expert on that so you should look on the ubuntu forums for help on editing your GRUB.
By reponzo01 [Affiliate User] 1212437405 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCan i install windows XP while Ubuntu is already been on the hard drive
By erdsearch [Affiliate User] 1212434846 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removeok. i just thought i would point that out if any one wants it to be exact
By jswfan13 [Affiliate User] 1212185002 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveRight. I just rounded it so I wouldn't get like a million questions as to why I chose 20480 instead of an even 20000 :P
By reponzo01 [Affiliate User] 1212156941 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveRight, I know that. In my video, I said I was making a 20GB partition...not a 2GB partition. So as not to confuse people, I just rounded to 20,000MB, instead of 20,480MB (20GB = 20,480MB). From an installation and OS perspective, it really doesn't matter.
By reponzo01 [Affiliate User] 1212156798 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removesorry 20gb = 20480
forgot the zero...
just so you know...
1gb = 1024mb
so 2gb = 2048mb not 20000
Hi, Yes you can. You can install Linux if Vista has already been on there for a while. You don't have to reinstall Vista or anything. My tutorial is still all relevant. In your case, you can just skip ahead to the part where we install Ubuntu. Just make sure you have enough drive space for Linux.
By reponzo01 [Affiliate User] 1211517850 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removecan i jus run windoes vista and linux and is all this stuff still relevant if i only hav those 2 and vista is allready been on for a while .................................and srry for beeing so nooby XD
