  • And one in ...

And one in particular talks about his bone cancer as a rumor. So sorry, it wasn't true.

  • I never said you ...

I never said you said he DIED of bone cancer, I simply said that he didn't have bone cancer. And I don't know who you have been interviewing or reading but you need to get your facts straight. It was more likely a test created by Dr. Nick in the inner circle just to see who would have spread this ridiculous rumor. A test to see who the most confidants would be. Elvis' autoupsy report never mention the possibility of bone cancer. And like you, I have read many books on Elvis.

  • As I was saying, he ...

As I was saying, he couldn't take codeine for pain, but the night before he died, he went to the dentist - where he was mistakenly prescribed pain pills for the dental work he'd had done. It has been said that it is quite possible that he had an allergic reaction to that medication. Definitely polypharmacia was a factor. But, I didn't say he DIED of bone cancer. Why don't you get YOUR facts straight before you lash out? You should read more. Plenty of great books from those closest to Elvis.

  • How do you know ...

How do you know that he didn't? How many books have you read which were written by those closest to Elvis? I've read more than 20 and seen COUNTLESS interviews. I also have friends who have done extensive interviews with the people most devoted to Elvis. I never said he DIED from bone cancer. He did have bone cancer. I think the problem is that your reading comprehension isn't very good. Yes, he was on medication - and he was allergic to codeine. He had to take Dilaudid because of that allergy.

  • Hey Mempho man, you ...

Hey Mempho man, you say that you are a freelance writer, well then maybe you should get your story right, he did NOT have bone cancer. He had several illnesses but not cancer. He was simply sick from his illnesses and took alot of perscriptions. I am tired of this old tale of bone cancer spreading around and it is because of people like you who won't let the rumor go. I don't mean to be rude but lets respect our "rock n roll King.

  • He had BONE cancer. ...

He had BONE cancer. He was being treated for it. He did have heart failure. If his heart hadn't failed, the doctors said he wouldn't have lived another six months to a year anyway due to his deteriorating physical condition due to all his health problems. In the summer 1977 video footage, you can see he is swollen & puffy from prednisone and other meds being used to treat his terminal illness. Only those very very close to him knew about the diagnosis. He did not want the public to know.

Okay I never knew this. Why did the doctors told the press that he died of a heart attack???? Didn't he die of lung cancer then???

  • But it is so ...

But it is so interesting to learn about the songwriters who contributed to Elvis' career - Mark James, Mac Davis, Jerry Chesnut, Eddie Rabbit, Billy Swan, Hoyt Axton, Roy Brown, Michael Jarrett & Sonny Charles, Percy Mayfield, and for me, especially Troy Seals. Interesting stuff to learn about how the songs they wrote came to be, and how Elvis got hold of them. Many of these guys are still writing great songs to this day. Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame website is a great source of info.

  • I'm not your "pal" ...

I'm not your "pal" & my age is nunya bidniz. Go to my page; I'm not a guy either. Why disparage Elvis? Why not talk about the great things he did? He was a wonderful human being who accomplished much in his 42 short years on this earth. He was a sick man - diagnosed with cancer & other health problems. The meds he took were PRESCRIBED. I don't want your negativity about Elvis. Not interested. There's too much good to talk about where Elvis is concerned. If you wanna smear him, doing it to w/ me.

Man,I'd really love to know how old are you and if you had the opportunity to see Elvis in person in Memphis(October 20th,1974 I think). 'Cause I did and I can surely say he was high on it,pal! And,yes,he did strung out that evening.

  • Tony Joe White also ...

Tony Joe White also wrote "I've Got a Thing About You Baby" & "For Ol' Times Sake" - which Elvis also recorded (July 21 & July 23, 1973 respectively) @ the legendary Stax Studios in Memphis.
"For Ol' Times Sake" was on the LP "Raised On Rock," released Oct. 1973 (released as Side B to "Raised On Rock" single in Sept. 1973).
"I've Got A Thing About You Baby" was released as a single in Jan. 1974, & was on the album "Good Times," released March 1974. Elvis fans should know this stuff.

  • Go to the official ...

Go to the official Elvis website and look for the record label called "FTD." That is the private record label that releases concert recordings and rare versions of songs. Follow That Dream records. Look at their catalog and you should find Polk Salad Annie available on several releases.... or visit Amazon and look them up. The Elvis boxed sets from Sony BMG are plentiful too. You can find many used albums on Amazon in great condition - for just a few dollars. Good luck...

  • What? Elvis never ...

What? Elvis never did illegal drugs. The medications he was taking were all prescribed to him by his physician. Elvis was diagnosed with bone cancer in the mid-70's, but he did not want his fans to know he was dying. Why believe the negative press, when the facts are out there? The media likes to focus on trash, sensationalism and lies... only because it gets more attention. It's not about journalism and the truth. Elvis was NOT a junkie. He didn't even drink alcohol. He was dying of cancer.

  • Gross! That isn't ...

Gross! That isn't true! Elvis often ripped his pants while doing his strenuous karate moves onstage, ESPECIALLY during this song. All true Elvis fans know that... He said what he did because he rocked out to the point of tearing the seat out of his suits and ripping the seams. It was embarrassing many times onstage. The suit designers (one of them being Bill Belew) reinforced a panel made out of a spandex type material for him to wear underneath his stage outfits instead of jockey shorts.

David Lee from Alabama is the top ETA. I don't like ETA's... but David Lee has the most respect. He looks like him, moves like him and sounds like him. Do a search on his website... David Lee.... He tours all over.

  • Maybe you should ...

Maybe you should get out more! He wrote Polk Salad Annie & Rainy Night in Georgia. He is still performing. He's a great songwriter, guitarist & vocalist. He's the KING of Swamp Rock. CCR was a bunch of boys from Berkley, California who'd never stepped foot in a swamp; just a bunch of posers. Tony Joe White is the real deal. Do a search & pull up his website. You'll be pleasantly surprised. What a shame you've never heard of him. Look beyond the Top 40 & what the media shoves down your throat.

  • Yes, songwriters ...

Yes, songwriters are & always have been entitled to make money from the songs they wrote. You say that as if there was something dirty, deceptive & lascivious about the fact that TJW made money off Elvis' performance of PSA. As I said in an earlier post, there is a GREAT interview with TJW on one of the big Elvis fan websites. He says he was very flattered that Elvis took this song & essentially made it his own. It was the ultimate compliment if Elvis performed your song, as you could imagine.

  • The verbal intro ...

The verbal intro from Elvis? That's part of the song, written by Tony Joe White! You should look up TJW's version. The lyrics - including the spoken intro to the song explaining what polk salad is - all of it has ALWAYS been a part of the song. That wasn't something that Elvis ad-libbed. Sorry!

  • Tame? It was the ...

Tame? It was the ORIGINAL swamp funk. I love TWJ's version too. Maybe a bit understated compared to Elvis' version full of karate moves. Why do people have to compare & choose? Why not like both? They weren't competing with one another. We can like both versions. I used to be a DJ and I played it often for a little old lady who was probably my most faithful listener. LOVE TJW's stanky, funky, twangy swamp axe. James Burton, a Louisiana boy himself, didn't do too bad on it either! Lawd hab mercy!

  • I know! Don't you ...

I know! Don't you love it! I love the video where Elvis is bumping Charlie with the guitar... Charlie was a clown and everyone says that no one could make Elvis laugh like Charlie. He could always lift Elvis' mood. They met on the troop ship on the way to Germany just after Gladys died. Elvis was in his rack, grieving... and little Cholly managed to cheer him up. They had a bond as Southern boys who loved Gospel music... and their friendship endured the ages. They're together now in Heaven.

You'll find an interview with TJW about that Vegas encounter on one of the Elvis fan websites. It is an EXCELLENT interview. Very interesting. TJW was overwhelmed and very flattered that Elvis took his song & made it his own. He loved it... He has never felt that Elvis "ripped" it from him.
