I think something got broken and the escalator started going down because of the weight of the people. Otherwise, the emergency red buttons would have been enough to stop it.

What I don't understand is why everyone didn't just turn around, or that people at the top didn't just start walking up. Maybe it was too late for the people at the bottom.

Although, if this happened in America, dozens of tumbling obese people would've likely killed hundreds.

Wasn't this the reason we put the GIANT RED BUTTON at the bottom that says EMERGENCY at the bottom AND top of the stairs? Shouldn't someone have pressed that button? I mean, 3 and 4 year olds do it all the time at the mall on the weekends.
