In this case, we mean animal rather than vegetable or mineral (birds aren't mammals, but they probably can be listed as animals, right?). The bald eagle, which grows and flies in abundance in Alaska and other mountainous regions of the world, is the national symbol of the United States. Actually, way back when our nation was choosing a symbol, Benjamin Franklin expressed a preference for the common turkey. It was not only indigenous to America, but less warlike.
