    The carnaval you see here is produced mostly by extremely poor people from poor Rio districts. Carnaval is part of their culture. They are proud of it. They want to show it. As for their poverty, it mostly relies on income distribution. Brazil has the 9th largest economy of the world... The poverty is is a political economical problem. Brazil has improved its economy towards better distribution but things like that take time. Enjoy the video if you can tolerate half naked women. ;)

While no one denies that there is poverty in Brazil, and many other countries like US and Turkey, it doesn't mean that you have to embrace it as your culture. No one wants to show their negative side in pride. The intent of this video is to show what is best to show.

    I think you should take the same precautions you would take when going to a big party in any big city. Carnaval events vary quite a lot within Rio and through out Brazil with different levels of security. The official Samba School Parade in Rio is well policed but you have to make sure you plan your trip well so you become familiar with buses, subways, hotel locations, maps, tourist attractions, etc. Just do your research like you would do going anywhere unfamiliar and you'll be fine.

    This year, for example, it was from february the 1st until february the 5th.

    Imediately after brazilian carnaval there is a holiday called "quarta-feira de cinzas" (which means "ash wednesday", which is the day when everybody rests from what they had during carnaval, ehehehehe). As this year carnaval ended on february the 5th (a tuesday), the "ash wednesday" were on february the 6th.
